In short, the humo.
For aging X er viewers, there's something undeniably sweet in seeing Vaughn and Wilson play a backward game of pop culture hopscotch, and it only gets sweeter when they miraculously land internships at Google, where the whole analog vs. digital, or human vs. technology, theme comes to a greasy head. As out of place as a middle aged man in a frat house, Nick and Billy find themselves in a primary coloured world filled with brainiac kids born in the year Jagged Little Pill was released. Self assured and largely home schooled, this younger generation is cutthroat and steeped in a sense of entitlement. They do not crave community because they feel connected to a virtual world online, and while Nick and Billy actually can press the flesh, these kids have no social skills even if they're whizzes at social media. Levy, the Canadian director behind Night at the Museum, never makes a spectacle of this movie's critical undertones.
competing against ambitious Ivy League educated 20 somethings for even menial jobs. It's a tough slide going from alpha status to dinosaur in the space of a decade, but it's an undeniably real and emotionally rich scenario that immediately lends a surprisingly tender heart. It also brings this Shawn Levy film an element of maturity the genre typically lacks. Instead, he takes Vaughn's story idea and cloaks it in standard genre clich from the requisite team building bar fight to the cheesy romantic through line involving Byrne and Wilson. Oh yeah. There's a handy competition element to the plot, as well, because Nick and Billy have to beat the cocky, youthful, handsome know it all who we can't help but loathe. Such schmaltzy claptrap gives a familiar finish, but what makes this movie truly interesting is what lies just beneath the veneer as every genre code gets hacked by human hands. Even the strip club sequence gets a rewrite as the star dancer turns out to be another Google employee looking to finance her academic career, just like the dancing welder played by Jennifer Beals in Flashdance. Perhaps the most notable turn is the movie's insistent sincerity. These are not the smarmy frat boys who've dominated the comic marquee for the Adidas Yeezy 950 Peyote
