the hospital would be one of the top three employers in New Westminster, spawning an industry of care that includes specialists in nearby practices, labs, X ray facilities and the hub of businesses like hotels, restaurants and cafes that service the thousands of employees and families of patients who pass through each year. The hospital's community has grown steadily. For many, the work of caregiving the cleaning, the administration, the cooking, the curing at Royal Columbian has been passed down generation to generation, many of its staff connected by marriage or blood. Sometimes the career door was opened by a family member a housekeeper who knew applications were being accepted for administrative assistants or porters and encouraged a relative to apply; just as often it was inspiration, tradition or coincidence. His father, Dr. Sheldon Rothwell, was a general practitioner and obstetrician who delivered thousands of babies at Royal Columbian.

The hard work of a general practitioner at the turn of the century involved house calls, said Dr. Robert Rothwell. "He used to row his rowboat across the Fraser River at night because the K de K, the old ferry, stopped at nine o'clock. There was no bridge, so you rowed across, then took a horse and buggy for house calls as far as Ladner. "Sheldon became a physician as well and returned to Royal Columbian Hospital as a general practitioner after studying at McGill and serving as a medical officer in remote areas of Canada. Rothwell recalls visiting the hospital at Christmas with his father. "He was an exceptionally generous man. He took chocolates to every single service section in the hospital: switchboard operators, wards, kitchen staff, housekeeping. "His father was also hardworking.

The busiest night he ever had included in 14 hours six deliveries, two appendectomies, and two house calls. "Occasionally young Robert Adidas Shoes Yeezy 350 did rounds with his father. He grew comfortable in the hospital environment, so much so that as a UBC student in the 1960s, he spent his summers working at Royal Columbian. tunities for care expanded. "The hospital had a whole new way of seeing itself with trained nursing. There was now a maternity cottage, and small separate buildings on the property were added isolation cottages for scarlet fever and tuberculosis," said Miller. Although New Westminster residents complained the Sapperton location was too remote, the hospital xpanded wing by wing over the century, becoming a small city in itself as around it another city grew.
